1st July Run

Please be reminded about this Sat's run!
And wow, its July already! How quickly time flies... ...

Next month in August we will have the Army Half Marathon and in about 5 months the Full Marathon, the event all of us are looking forward to isn't it?
Same meeting venue this sat, 1st July: Westlake Ave road junction Click Here to see Map
Same meeting time: 6.30am
Running route: 14+km
West Lake -> Upper Thomson -> Peirce -> SICC -> 3km trail -> West Lake

Understand that the Argentina vs Germany match will be on the night before... so do your best to set alarm clocks to get up!

As for me... I'm still a little ill and will do my best to get up to at least run a short 10km loop.

Expert's Point of View

Root cause of the accident:
1) Temporary distracted by the sun and did not concentrate on jogging
2) Maybe dreaming of some wonderful happenings
3) Complacency and take for granted that the route is very safe and flat
4) Front runner did not give warning - ha ha (not my fault)
5) Back runner was too far behind to prevent the fall
6) Wear inappropriate PPE that did not provide protection from knock and only provide facial protection from sun
7) Lack of training on how to fall properly
8) Did not wear pillow at the buttock to absorb the impact of the fall
9) Failure to identify the risk of low branch even though it was painted white and with warning remarks on the boardwalk

Lesson learnt - don't wear sunshade to run at MR

Han Boon

Account from the Victim

Ha..ha..you forgot to add that I was literally,"Knocked into form".Not bad considering that I was able to continue and complete the run.

After I saw stars and blacked out momentarily,I heard my half past six mates(Boon's, Jo's and Kenneth's voices) asking if I was alright and encouraging me to try to sit up. Except for some soreness on the front portion just above forehead, back of head and tailbone, slight bruise, cut on left elbow and and a blue-black fourth finger (I must have used my left hand to break the fall), I recovered remarkably well, aided by much humour from my half past six kakis!

Yes, the visor or sun shade was part of the cause. I wanted to avoid the sun-rays to protect my skin mah and I cast my eyes downwards on the boardwalk. Another reason, I would usually return by the nature trail instead of the longer distance boardwalk so wasn't quite familiar & expecting that low lying elbow branch!!!

Warmest Regards, Jennifer Lim-Kwong

About the run on 24Jun

We had a good run yesterday.
Maybe around 15 runners or so.

After reaching the Rangers' toilet we ran the reverse direction to the tower & broadwalk to the MR carpark. While running on the broadwalk, Jen actually ran right into a low lying branch! Her head hit hard on the branch (painted white) and she fell flat on her back!

The culprit: Her sunshade!!
So please be careful when you are running along the broadwalk. Be double careful if you have a sunshade on!

See you on Sat. Do not forget your mid week run.

New Running Route

Oh Yes, Oh Yes... Saturday is just round the corner.

Captain Kenneth suggests we try a different route this time.
Same meeting venue: Westlake Ave road junction Click Here to see Map
Same meeting time: 6:30am

Proposed Route: WL -> Upper Thomson -> SICC Upper Thomson -> Rangers toilet -> Tower -> Broadwalk -> MR Carpark -> WL

The distance will be around 12km or so, unless of course, you can run extra 2km or more by taking the loop outside the damaged track (because oflandslide) after the Rangers toilet.

Have a super run. I will be doing a short one in the morning coz I'm doing a kids training program, read about it here.

Suggestion: Any one can add a comment here. Otherwise email to me a message or review about the runs and I'll post it here for all to read. You can also contribute interesting articles here for all to read. Look out for one middle next week!

Have a GREAT weekend and God Bless!

TGIF

TGIF...

Yes, its Friday today! Hurray! That means we run tomorrow...

Be reminded about Sat's run.

- Same meeting venue: Westlake Ave road junction Click Here to see Map
- Same meeting time: 6.30am
- Running route: about 14 km
West Lake -> Upp Thomson -> Upp Peirce -> SICC -> 3km trail -> West Lake

You can always run 2-3km extra at the 3km trail along the broadwalks!

Meanwhile, I'd like to share something I read on line recently about Belly Breathing.
As the name already suggests, it is to use your belly to breathe. It is perhaps one of the more challenging techniques to master for a new runner, yet helpful helpful it will be even if you are only able to mildly execute it.

When running or doing any sport for that matter, it is certainly important to maximize the amount of oxygen drawn into our lungs with each breath. Why not call it Lung Breathing, you ask? Because, that's why. Anyway, here's how you do it. Roll your shoulders forward slightly (also known in stuffy circles as slouching) and let them relax. As you breathe in, push out with your stomach and at the same time push down and out with your diaphragm. This allows maximum room for your lungs to expand and draw in precious oxygen.

If you're not sure where and/or what your diaphragm is, its somewhere above your stomach and under your lungs. I recommend you check an anatomy book for better clarity. Once you get comfortable with how this feels, focus on how many strides you can cover between inhales. Initially, four strides (eight total steps, two steps per stride) will probably be just about your limit, but after a little practice you should be able to reach eight strides. Give it some time, it will start to feel more natural. And if you have problems with side cramps, this technique will put an instant smile on your face. :)
